Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Care: Provide direct, high-quality nursing care to patients in line with DOH protocols and standards. Administer medications, wound care, and assist with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and feeding
- Diagnosis and Treatment: Assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of HIV, TB, Maternal and Child Health, and Non-Communicable Diseases. Conduct health assessments and screenings for patients
- Vital Signs Monitoring: Regularly monitor and record patients' vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure
- Medical Assistance: Assist physicians and Registered Nurses (RNs) with medical procedures, treatments, and examinations
- Health Education: Educate patients and their families about health conditions, treatments, and preventive measures. Provide counselling on lifestyle adjustments and treatment adherence
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including observations, treatments, and medications administered
- Infection Control: Implement and adhere to infection control policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff
- Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, researchers, and academic collaborators, to provide comprehensive care and support to patients
- Community Outreach: Participate in community outreach and health education initiatives to raise awareness about health issues and promote preventive care
- Data Management: Manage and maintain HAST, TB DS & TB DR data management systems. Utilize DHIS2 and Tier.net systems for efficient data management and reporting
- Compliance: Adhere to all regulations and standards set by the Nursing Council of South Africa
Specialized Responsibilities:
- HIV and TB Management:
- Patient Screening: Conduct regular screenings for HIV and TB among high-risk populations.
- Treatment Adherence: Monitor and support patients to ensure adherence to HIV and TB treatment regimens.
- Support Groups: Facilitate support groups for patients living with HIV and TB to provide psychological support and peer encouragement.
- Contact Tracing: Conduct contact tracing to identify and test individuals who may have been exposed to TB.
- Infection Control: Implement stringent infection control measures to prevent the spread of TB, especially in healthcare settings
- TB-DS/DR (Drug-Sensitive and Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis):
- DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short-Course): Administer DOTS for TB patients to ensure compliance with the treatment plan
- Drug-Resistant TB Care: Monitor and manage patients with drug resistant TB, ensuring they follow complex treatment protocols
- Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs):
- Chronic Disease Management: Assist in managing patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.
- Lifestyle Counselling: Provide counselling on lifestyle modifications, including diet, exercise, and smoking cessation, to manage NCDs.
- Screening and Monitoring: Conduct regular screenings for early detection of NCDs and monitor patients’ progress.
- Community Outreach: Participate in community outreach programs to raise awareness about NCD prevention and management
- Hospital and High-Volume Facility Support: Deploy to hospitals and high volume facilities to support the clinical care of patients, including providing linkage services to ensure continuity of care
Required Qualifications:
- Educational Requirements: Completion of a recognized Enrolled Nursing program
- Licensing: Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an Enrolled Nurse
- Experience: Practical experience in a clinical setting is often preferred
- Enrolled Nursing Certificate and current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a clinical setting, preferably with a focus on HIV, TB, Maternal and Child Health, or Non-Communicable Diseases
- Strong clinical and patient care skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team and independently
- Commitment to continuous professional development and learning
- Willingness to participate in community outreach and education activities
- Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage
