In order to be considered for appointment as an External Moderator, the applicants must:
have a relevant qualification in education at a Bachelor’s Degree level or equivalent, with a major in the Subject/Learning Area that the applicant applies for;
have extensive education and training experience in the particular field of study at a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)/Nursing College, University, relevant Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA), Community Education and Training (CET) and/or adult sector;
have experience as an examiner, chief marker and/or internal moderator at the national level;
be familiar with current assessment trends;
have good communication, computer and writing skills;
have the ability to plan and conduct moderation and verification without direct supervision; and
have the ability to provide appropriate and necessary support, advice and guidance to examiners, chief markers and internal moderators.
Additional requirements:
Knowledge of the applicable curriculum, assessment, related policies and guideline documents is essential;
Ability and expertise to analyse policies and other relevant assessment documents will be an added advantage;
Willingness to travel to fulfil the assigned moderation and verification tasks; and Valid driver’s license.
Responsibilities:
Moderation of question papers;
Moderation of Site-Based Assessment (SBA) tasks;
Moderation of SBA portfolios;
Quality assurance of marking;
Submission of reports to Umalusi on the quality of question papers, marking and internal assessment; and
Provide feedback on the quality of the assessment system and make recommendations on how the assessment system can be improved.
