Requirements: 

Certificate in Operational Emergency Care Practitioner (Paramedic-minimum level 7) or equivalent Nursing Degree/Diploma-both with current extensive experience in Trauma casualties. Applicants must be registered with the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa) or SANC (South African Nursing Council.). Must have extensive experience of current ACLS protocols (a current ACLS certificate will be advantageous), as well as indepth knowledge of ATLS protocols. The candidate must also have excellent Clinical Assessment skills and Patient Nursing, and Pharmaceutical drug dispensing experience is essential. Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Patient Rights Charter, Public Service Regulation Act and Labour Relation Act is required. Must have leadership skills, decision making, problem solving, interpersonal skills and computer skills in basic programmes. The incumbent must be able to work independently with minimal support under extreme pressure and without supervision. Personal Professional Indemnity Insurance is advisable. The incumbent must have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team. 

Duties: 

The incumbent will be responsible for the medical treatment of all team members during the expedition period and must work according to their Scope of Practise regulations at all times. Minor Dental and X-Rays may need to be undertaken Applicant must understand Antibiotic therapies. Prepare monthly and annual reports, do stock-takes of food and medicines, order spares and equipment and do other common “non-technical” duties performed by expedition members. The Medic acts also in the Food/Hygiene/Housekeeper/Linen and tailoring roles and works closely with the Team Leader to co-ordinate and train for the Rescue and evacuation/emergency procedures for the Island as well as in a social role to motivate and encourage fellow team members.
